“When we two parted" By Lord Byron

“There is love in holding and there is love in letting go.”
― Elizabeth BergThe Year of Pleasures

In silence and tears

Half broken-hearted
To sever for years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold,
Colder thy kiss;
Truly that hour foretold
Sorrow to this.

The dew of the morning
Sank chill on my brow -
It felt like the warning
Of what I feel now.
Thy vows are all broken,
And light is thy fame;
I hear thy name spoken,
And share in its shame.

They name thee before me.
A knell in mine ear;
A shudder come o'er me -
Why wert thou so dear?
They knew not I knew thee.
Who knew thee too well -
Long, long shall I rue thee,
Too deeply to tell.

In secret we met -
In silence I grieve,
That thy heart could forget,
Thy spirit deceive.
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee?
With silence and tears.

About the author

“When we two parted" is a poem written by lord Byron, who is successful politician and well known poet. He born in England, he became very successful not only in his political career but also in his literary career. He died of at the age of 36. Though he died at early age of his life.

Lord Byron has written the poem "when we two parted" addressing to lovers beloved. He narrates the sorrow and feeling of parting in this poem, In the first few lines the poet expresses the situation how they parted and therefore the poet says, "when we two parted, in silence and tears"

Analysis of the poem:

                  This Romantic is about a couple's reaction towards the ending of their love. It shows what kind of emotions and struggles the couple went through. During the separation, the couple felt torment and pitiful, about loosing some passionate love. No reconciliation ever heard or seen. At the end, the only one who founded another spark of love was the wife who had acquired a secret affair without letting her old love find out. She was the only one who found another reason to love.

     The poet expresses that when his beloved was about to live lover none of them could utter a single word and the situation begin unbearable as they were parting from each other not only for days one or two but "four years"

       After that the poet blames hours when the lover and the beloved were together as the happy hour it self for told at the separation that both the lovers has to face in the future.
When the poet talks about 'dew of the morning' which he felt like a warning bell as the poet thinks that whatever the lover is feeling now, sorrowful situation the dew of morning already had warned him for what is going to happen and this feeling has very well depicted in the poem,
"IT FELT LIKE THE WARNING OF WHAT I FEEL NOW"

          Further in the poem Byron talks about vows that are broken which indicates that beloved of the lover is no more with him and that she has broken all her promises which she gives once and now she is not that in his life to keep her promises. Then the poet talks about beloved fame which is now not that much and has become light. The poet can here name of the beloved spoken by relatives and freinds then the poet also says that when he was have relationship they must had physical relationship which has now pickup their shame. Their love is no more and therefore the time that they spent make them feel, shameful.

      When people around the lover take name of his beloved . It feels like "kneel to his ears" .The poet further regrets why his beloved was so dear to him he talks to people that

"THEY KNOW NOT I KNOW THEE
WHO KNEW THEE TOO WELL"

    Which means the poet not only loved her but he could understand every emotion felt by his beloved and now when she is not with him he regrets why he loves her so much and it is becoming unbearable situation of separation for him.
      In the last few lines of poem the poet expresses his grieve on their meeting and he calls the spirit of his beloved deceive as her heart can forget whatever quality time they spent with each other secretly. After long years when the poet would be meeting his beloved how should he would great her when both of them parted. They only had silence to expresses and tears to share and after long time when they would meet there mean to express feeling would be again 'silence and tears' which is beautifully written in the last few lines of the poem...

" After long years
How should i greet thee?
With silence and tears."
